We’d bought the land several years before and looked forward to building our dream home.

We wanted to make sure that the layout and all of our decisions would satisfy our needs and accommodate our growing family. It was important to us that the house be comfortable and energy efficient. We live in an area that necessitates both heating and cooling systems. We looked into all different types of temperature control. While the initial investment cost was certainly a factor, we were more concerned with monthly expenses and environmental responsibility. The Environmental Protection Agency rates geothermal heat pumps as the most energy efficient. These systems use energy provided by the sun to achieve 400% efficiency ratings. The heat pump not only handles both heating and cooling but also offers a virtually free source of hot water. The system effectively combats high humidity, filters contaminants out of the air and won’t dry out the air in the winter. It operates quietly, is exceptionally clean and because of few moving parts, is especially reliable. The actual heat pump is installed inside the house, protected from the weather and should last for upwards of twenty years. There is an underground loop system that is responsible for absorbing heat from the earth and is warrantied for fifty years. We can expect the loop to last twice that long. The energy savings on our monthly utility bills has worked to recover the higher startup costs in under five years. Plus, we are totally happy with year round comfort. The geothermal heat pump has been a worthwhile solution. It has definitely increased the value and enjoyment of our home.

As much as I fought to stay inside that zone controlled HVAC of the office when the pandemic hit, I now felt completely the opposite. Initially, it was really tough to find any sort of focus and rhythm when I first started working from home in my own air conditioning. But before long, I started to get the hang of the online meetings and getting my work done. The thing that started to emerge was just how much more freedom I had over my day. Without all the endless interruptions by well intended coworkers, I was getting so much more work done. And that work was of a much higher quality as well. The biggest thing that made the most difference when working at home in my own air conditioning was having my own space. Being able to close the door and get to work was fantastic. The kids were doing their thing and are old enough and dedicated to their studies enough that I didn’t have to sit on them. So when I brought up the fact that I’d like to continue to work remotely, the bosses weren’t exactly thrilled as I tend to be a go to answer guy. But I held firm and I even got some incentives to continue working remotely. With that bonus, I bought a small, prefab building and put it in the back yard. Well obviously, the heating cost down here are negligible really so it’s more like I spent a ton on HVAC cooling costs. That just had to end. I mean, I was spending so much money on air conditioning that I could have purchased a new car. That is ludicrous so I did some research and visited the HVAC professionals at the HVAC company to see how I could change all that. Really, it all came down to changing my behavior. That’s really what it was all about. Instead of just cranking the air conditioning, I decided to change my perspective and consider what I was doing. That’s the first step when it comes to changing behavior. I started by waiting to flip the thermostat over to HVAC cooling until it really got hot. This way, I was a lot more accustomed to the heat by the time summer actually hit. And then I simply got proactive a bit by making sure the house was sealed up tight and that I was stopping any sort of direct sunlight heating. Both of those are pretty simple. But it was the behavior change with the thermostat that made the most difference. I simply programmed the digital thermostat and left it alone. I stopped myself from cranking down the thermostat setting because I simply felt like it. Instead, I just got accustomed to the rhythm of the summer and cranked a fan when I felt too warm.

When I decided to get myself a whole lot more self sustaining, I got a lot of jokes at my expense.

I heard all the hippie jokes and that I’d be living in a hut with chickens all around.

Well, I do have chickens but they’re pretty good about staying where they supposed to. But I also have quality heating and air where I live and wifi and all the rest. Just because I chose being self sufficient and turning away from the grid, retail and all that stuff doesn’t mean that I’m a cave man. It took the better part of 6 years for me to fully fund and construct the situation where I now live. It took finding the right property and then building in the infrastructure myself. Of course I had help with building my 2 bedroom house and putting in the solar array. But largely, I did most of the work myself. When it came to the residential HVAC, I turned to the HVAC professionals for guidance and understanding. They suggested that my best bet would be to use a pair of ductless heat pumps in my house. The solar energy I use allows for that. I really don’t use the ductless heat pumps during the winter as I have a wood stove. But I do use the ductless heat pump in the summer. It can get hot here and I like having air conditioning for that purpose. It’s funny when people come to visit and see that I live much the way they do. It’s just that I don’t have to be at the mercy of corporations or utilities to enjoy where I live.

I don’t think I’m actually all that stubborn.

It’s just that I don’t necessarily accept something as fact if it just seems illogical. So when that happens, I’d like to understand just how this certain something has come to be taken as fact. This recently happened when the realtor listing our house told us we needed to replace the HVAC equipment in our home. That was one of several things that she wanted us to do to improve the value of our home. While I’m all for improving the value of my home, I didn’t understand how that related to ditching a perfectly good residential HVAC. The HVAC equipment we have was the very latest in residential HVAC when we purchased it not quite 15 years ago. And we have consistently paid to have seasonal HVAC maintenance since the time the HVAC unit was installed. It works as well as it did the day it was installed. And I think this HVAC unit will go another 10 to 15 years at least. While the realtor appreciated my perspective, she was able to break her reasoning down with facts and data. This I love. Being able to see verifiable data helps me learn and understand. The data clearly showed that while our HVAC unit might be just fine, buyers want the latest in HVAC technology. And they want the higher end of SEER rating to have the most efficient HVAC they can. This all made sense to me but I still felt gross about tossing out working machinery. She had an answer there as well. The HVAC company would take the HVAC unit out in tact and donate it to those who could benefit from a still working HVAC unit.

I was recently on holiday & staying at this 5 star hotel with our wife.

The people I was with and I had a lot of fun & at evening when the day was done every one of us would always go to the hotel lounge.

They usually had drink specials & all in there. But the other thing that was truly beautiful about this hotel lounge was the honestly great that they had. The central was unlike any you would usually find in lounges. Part of this is because they did not allow any smoking in there. This helped the air quality. The other thing was the lounge was inside the hotel so you did not have to worry about people coming in & out & making the go weak. That was a immense perk as well. This central method they had was area of their commercial heat & air conditioner unit. The power that it had was amazing. The central was the perfect temperatures throughout the entire lounge. There was not a spot there that the did not hit just as good as the other spots. If you wanna talk about perfect indoor temperature control, this hotel lounge was it. It was truly anxious that every one of us had to leave & go home, because I would have been able to live this life forever! Going to the hotel lounge & enjoying the atmosphere along with the central was pure heaven to tell you the truth.

When I started up our cooling system for the first time in May, there were some minor problems.

The air coming out of the vents had a musty aroma & introduced some dust & other debris into our breathing air.

The operational sound was a bit noisy, & I observed the cooling system was running longer than respected & struggling to cool down the house. I hoped our fiance wouldn’t notice the troubles. While our fiance is harshly handy when it comes to increasing the oil & handling the service & repairs for our vehicles, he’s not all that good around the house. After he attempted to fix our vacuum cleaner, I needed to buy a one one, then he wasn’t delighted with the performance of our washing machine, maintained it, & I then needed to schedule a repair. I was hoping to schedule cooling system service with a licensed & certified Heating, Ventilation, & A/C professional. The troubles with the cooling method seemed to be really solved with basic service. I doubted it would cost all that much, and unluckyly, our fiance fiddled with the control unit, heard the cooling system make some odd sounds & got out his tool box. He took the component apart. There were parts scattered across the lawn. He cleaned each one & spent minutes reassembling the cooling system. Once he was finished, the cooling method wouldn’t start up at all. I let our fiance fiddle with the method all weekend. On Monday day, I hired a real Heating, Ventilation, & A/C supplier to come to the beach house & give repairs. It was really a lot more high-priced because of our fiance’s efforts.
