Although I moved to a new town just to go to college, I ended up working on campus instead of studying there. I had been obsessed with this university all through high school, but once I got there I realized it was a fantasy. It was just a school, like any other, and one that cost a small fortune to attend! Faced with applying to expensive classes I might not be able to afford, I rethought my future and decided to look for a sign. Then I saw a flier that changed my life, as a local HVAC repair company was looking for new employees, and were offering on-the-job training. Never before had I considered being an HVAC worker, but one quick Google search opened my eyes to a great opportunity. The base starting pay for certified HVAC techs was far beyond anything I was hoping to make. I knew I wouldn’t start at that rate, because I didn’t have HVAC certification, but it meant this was a job with a future. Since the demand for skilled HVAC work was so high, the salaries were very attractive, and boosted me to call the number the next morning. I told them I had no experience but was eager to learn the basics of HVAC work and make a career out of it. Within a few months I was back on campus, only now I was the assistant to an HVAC tech to worked in the dorms and the classrooms. It wasn’t the future I envisioned, but at least it is a future!
