Even though my partner and I live in a moderate climate, there are still some afternoons while I was in the Winter months when the temperatures are chilly overnight.
These cold temperatures never last more than a couple of hours, but they can be hard on the chickens.
My partner and I have had chickens in our backyard for 10 years. The kids really adore feeding the creatures and looking for eggs. I observed the chickens were legitimately lethargic last Winter when the temperatures were cold while I was in January and January. This year I decided to make some changes. I added a small radiant oil furnace in the outdoor chicken coop. It’s close to the top of the building where the chickens won’t bother it. The machine is cold to the touch, so the two of us don’t have to be anxious about the creatures getting hurt or being affected. A few afternoons after I added the radiant heater, I observed a large difference in the behavior of the creatures. They were making more noise and they were much more active. The chickens are so much happier now that they have heat while I was in the cold Winter afternoons. I’m so cheerful that my partner and I made the decision to add heat to the chicken house. Every one of us had our eyes set on a couple of Easter egg laying chickens that are at the pet store. If they are still there in April when the weather is warmer, I believe the two of us will genuinely bring them home and make them section of our family. It’s too hard to introduce a new hen in winter, but Springtime will labor out well.
