Is it possible for a furnace to fix itself?

I knew I was having a problem with my furnace, but whenever the HVAC company showed up to check it out, there was nothing wrong.

I thought there was something wrong with me, and maybe I had a disease where I was always imagining something wrong with my furnace. The next time I heard the odd grinding noise, I decided to tape it with my phone. By the time I had my phone out and ready to record, the noise quit again. I didn’t know what was going on, but I knew that if I let it go on, I could end up needing a new furnace. I waited for three weeks before calling the HVAC company again. The HVAC tech came to the house and did a full inspection of the furnace. He told me he couldn’t find a single thing wrong. I was wondering if it was possible for a furnace to fix itself, when the noise happened again, and the HVAC tech heard it. He looked at me and asked if that’s what I had been hearing? I nodded, and he sat there quietly and listened again. We went downstairs, and he pointed to the ductwork. There was a small hole in the ductwork. When the furnace turned on, there was just enough air blowing through to cause a whistle. I was never so happy to find something wrong with the ductwork as I was that day. If the HVAC tech hadn’t been there, we would have never found the problem. The ductwork was cleaned and repaired three days later.
