I couldn’t wait for the delivery of my custom couches.

When I was growing up, I was continually telling my grandmother that I wanted her couch in my house when I grew up.

She would laugh and say that by the time I grew up, her couches would be so old that I wouldn’t want them.

When Grandma got older, she moved in with my aunt. Her matching sofas were still in her house and she told me I could have them. Everyone else planned on taking all of her belongings and either trashing them or sending them to goodwill. I had every intention of going to the house and taking the couches and maybe the matching chairs that went with them. Once I got my sofas and chairs to the upholstery shop, all he did was whistle. He wanted to know where I had found such beautiful sofas. I told him about my grandmother and he smiled. He said the couches were from the eighteenth century and he had seen nothing so wonderfully preserved. He said he could put new upholstery on the four items and he would add some stuffing, but he was going to keep them as original as possible. It thrilled me to hear he could restore my sofas and chairs, and I couldn’t wait to have them brought into my house. It’s the same house my grandmother lived in, and I bought it. When I got my sofas and chairs back, I took the ottoman and the steamer trunk in. I wanted to know if he could restore them. When he showed up at the house, he was in awe of the antique furniture I now owned. He said that if I ever wanted to get rid of any furniture; I had to call him first.
