My kid brother Mike has been a screw up for most of his life.
He had stayed with me before, crashing on my couch for a few days up to a few weeks, before drifting away.
Sometimes he just disappears without saying goodbye, and I don’t hear from him until he needs a place to stay again. I was trying to break the cycle, but this time Mike is motivated. He has a plan, he wants to really work for a living instead of partying, so I said he could crash in the garage. He has started taking night classes for HVAC repair at the city college, and is working part time with a local contractor to pay for them. He seems focused on studying, so he can get his HVAC certification, so I said it was okay to sleep in the garage for a few months. Much to my surprise he started doing homework in the form of bringing home old air conditioning pieces to take apart and put back together. He really wanted to learn heating and cooling systems from the inside out which shows me how seriously he is taking this. He asked if he could look at my home HVAC system, and I said that he could look but not mess around with it. One day I believe Mike will be the one and only HVAC tech who works in my home, but that day has not arrived just yet. We will see what happens in two months, when he takes the big HVAC certification exam.
